Here is my latest soap. It's my first swirl attempt. I found the technique on You Tube and decided to try it.

There of course were some problems with streaking but I like it anyway. The fragrance oil is Yuzu which is a fruity floral. It's light and really nice.

I am having so much fun with the whole process. It stretches my creativity.
The scent is Cherry Blossom. This was my first attempt at a 2 color pour. I was very pleased with how it came out. It feels like I am progressing in knowledge as I go. After it has cured for 2 weeks I will try it and see how it lathers. Then it will cure another 2-4 weeks before I can give it out to my test group and see how they evaluate it.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 261px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDFMorBnYkTKF3l3K4q-se9fQToIi2IkyttBvjCqCMql-RKKFDAOSFFFOSpsJbd4MEFE3qGQCGg3IFIRDaL7F24jNT03oPQ13snlS03IcDv_zPtI9nuPj2yE4UpRl3Zh-WsQtOfckwXnfU/s320/cherry+blossom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727221552637745074" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnA78NUC0QpYmq3EGXuFjzedgf_aFKtVD2KKBW-PVNy25NYhPk08WoaHe2G70waDlpGRSQYiUGqtTyJEyMKGFy7mNQ7xfnWuTuP3kr_psm2ymjjnA2g6mpC6Y9sL_2vHHdNtfKW9xUTCSk/s320/cherry+blossom+cut.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727221661897559170" />
Now it's outside to weed. My friends and family will be the cleanest group around.

This one smells wonderful. It is colored with Neon yellow and fragranced with Pearberry. The color is super fun and the fragrance is light. It was a great pairing.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7ogSAA8R3DE1V0LV38kYQUi5wUFoKFQqZC-AFDv_jCd6RsqYHrfYlN9dXPSd-N6Qu06vrFalVqYqZjCAkWAIJKOkvL5oYtpZyI3TcyIdIwe2_mSdCYC96ue_ooiLE_uqs-NV_S50fTEIS/s320/lemon+sherbet+pearberry+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726596271114995506" />
This next one started out as a Pepto Bismol pink but as the soap cures it is becoming a nicer shade of pink. can't wait to try this one.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ3uDbzO2V_9GW6XXZZy0_pFdfPs1BcmFNVKDLhZxf2oivYeUMiQZRMYbCJb60jUB6PuxrspLNY9URybrseI94EUPqEPTyBBS4kMJUCnUG_D4kc8qhIzbOQoOqF4zxWGYwu62OdKIW_vBE/s320/almond+oil+cut.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726596739771715698" />

I can't wait for my new shipment of fragrances. It was a free sample from Brambleberry. My supplier... Soap supplies.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhopx21m5jHTY5ERn26deW6102XjYMxlWQ4VZfqn4LTDZB70BVfNFdomU0s1G_7DHn-cdCum_iX3TBrVtSyxTR480qd1DmAGAoMk9GIYOcLrVeTmLmfdi95vOS2Bye75P0GhjwVDUC8iegm/s320/christmas+016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720641723347160610" />

Did you know that Lye is used in the production of bombs and Crystal meth?? Neither did I till I started making soap. Making soap is a chemical reaction too. But what fun I'm having. The possible combinations are endless.

Batch #3 is an all Olive Oil soap. It's called Castile soap. It's supposed to be the best soap for you.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 231px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4FGdz6Rx973LDoBJH91nuA0gF63GRgwZz8VXuTbElHtaMONHYPSv5RhraYW2GDYafIUH-z52DAPswJ4o5Q9hq8AfUTqjy6mSVVR3YVcnTSfv4h3eXGPiBPnKMqKkBYftVgFSsYL47HuOk/s320/castile+soap+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720643378960925170" />

The only problem with it is it has to cure for 3-6 months before you can use it. Can't wait to try it.

Batch #4 is my favorite so far.
I used a red palm oil to get the color and the addition of canned pumpkin and pumpkin spice fragrance oil makes this a bar good enough to eat.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDVpJPC2MuFFtYaYZN4N1hjTJ72aHxnYm00aM35ZNi9vKfrmUcOZyHAv332B5wuhGWGH83YFY8gDi8QoIxCXD1wPr4CTCBeHDpNZquTzy6duD2EOMfKINukk_xhTqTKOSImUfEq6W4QInM/s320/gel+stage+pumpkin+spice.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720644339432502370" />
This is it going through "Gel Phase" which is a step in soap making. Love my new loaf molds.

This is it all cut up for curing. Seriously doesn't it look like pumpkin custard except in block form. Wish you could smell it. It smells just like pumpkin pie.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisT-q9inh5lO4I81uEYx6Yp0Mh_85RYFBZFVFHG4EsWHIK3p0mVHDx2NUNqwXq34dW9cyrW1zJXqTHN-e1vuaZ-UCYKBpaaBi-gREitMeb-xxjIue6FkwY43ndeteXi1Ax79tEwRhUZBvF/s320/pumpkin+spice+cut.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720644775459038434" />

The "curing" area.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCmtr3ygpQDtQidLjK_rEjJeyOT6Yg7NG-DBprVWR1heWGj284u4ultqh-5qERqP8v6LWTk-pJx0hfxT26nFcDdOCcxlXd0fsUmDJdvy5VXT7eifGQfGCgL0vzPVvnJsnDAvARHra7xgF8/s320/first+batches.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720645961539743298" />

My family will be the cleanest is the county.
Happy Weekend.

RhondaRhondahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17795081104677489453noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7143105794211342227.post-1247963062922700512012-02-26T04:00:00.003-08:002012-02-26T04:00:09.717-08:00Pinterest ProjectsOk.... Like I need another source of projects. But have you seen Pinterest?? Of course I have several boards and will be starting more I know.
One of the projects in my file there was a cover for my Composition books. You know the kind with the black and white covers.
I have one for Quilting 2012, Soap making 2012 and Wool. But I needed to appeal to my aesthetic side. They, to me, were unsightly with their cardboard covers.

So......... I found several tutorials on Pinterest and combined them for my covers.

Couple things I like about them. One I can leave them on my shelf and they don't stand out as a modern book. Two they have a built in book mark and Three the flaps on the front and back are handy for storing papers that I write notes on until I can transfer them to the pages.
In my next ones I'm going to try and put in an envelope of some sort and a pen holder??? That may be too much for the book but we'll see.

The tutorials are found here on Pinterest

Enjoy!!
RhondaRhondahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17795081104677489453noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7143105794211342227.post-65626774256848983942012-02-26T04:00:00.001-08:002012-02-26T04:00:03.942-08:00Soap-Another ObsessionHappy Sunday to you all. As I was researching the laundry soap recipe I found lots of articles on making regular bar soap. I was intrigued with the whole process. So began another obsession for me. I began reading everything I could get my hands on about making soap. At present count I believe I've read 9 books. Anything the library had I requested. (The librarian is starting to look at me kinda funny.)It was amazing to me how many You Tube videos I found too. I lost count of how many of those I watched.
The ingredients are pretty accessible-just oils mostly form the grocery store. but one thing kept me from jumping in LYE. Yep the ingredient that kept me stymied was the thing that makes soap soap. It reacts with the oils in a chemical reaction that manufactures soap. Ok I know what you're thinking. Why put that in your soap. It's in all soap. We just aren't seeing the word lye. They use it's chemical name. Sodium Hydroxide. But I digress. So I pulled up my big girl pants and went looking for Lye. Did you know you can make crystal meth and a bomb with Lye?? I didn't... but I do now.
You should have seen the looks on people's faces when I asked if they carried it. You know that MasterCard commercial PRICELESS.
Nough said.
In the end I sent for a beginners kit. Bought all the utensils and waited for the arrival of my ingredients.

Here's my first attempt at soap making. It has a Cranberry Fig fragrance. It's not the prettiest soap I've ever seen but for my first attempt I'm pleased. It went through all the chemical processes it was supposed to. It sat for 24hours and then I could cut it. I didn't like the long skinny bars so I switched to more of a rectangular shape.

Here is a close up of a cut bar.

Now it has to cure for 4-6 weeks before I can use it.
I have so many pretty bars pinned on my Pinterest board that I can't wait to try more. I'm thinking as I make more and get into it more I'll do Soapy Sunday posts.
I have been bitten by the bug.
The possibilities are endless.
I'll have the cleanest family on the block.
There's so many oils and fragrances as well as other natural ingredients that I can't wait to start more types. I'm thinking Honey Oatmeal, Goats milk and Honey, Pumpkin Spice. A recipe for liquid laundry soap that is. My SIL gave it to me last week and I couldn't wait to try it. It only takes 4 ingredients including the water.

Fels Naptha Soap,Mule team Borax, and Arm and Hammer Washing soda. I found all 3 ingredients at Trader Horn. Not sure who else carries them but I'm told they are pretty easy to find.

As you can see you will need a grater,measuring cups,a pot to mix in and a container to store the finished gel in. I used an old kitty litter bucket to store it in because it fits perfectly under the sink in the laundry room and has a lid.

I wanted to show you the pan I got at the Thrift Store because I think it emulates the frugality I am starting to notice more and more.

Do you see it?? Notice the handles on the pot. Yep one is not like the other. One is wooden and brown. The other it the original and black. Now add the lid. Not the correct lid either but it does fit. Wonder who fixed the handle and how long did they use it after that.

I just love this picture of the grated Fels Naptha.
It has so much texture and color. Not really a yellow fan but I'll call it gold and it'll work.
Liquid gold it is. Made a 2 gallon batch for guess...........
Ready $1.88 Can you believe it. Now that's not including water but you could figure that in if you'd like.

I write all the figures all over the box so I can keep track of the cost.
Can you tell how excited I was to discover this economical way for making laundry soap??
My SIL said she's used it for awhile and it cleans well. I did some research on the Internet and anyone who I found that uses it loves it. For a fraction of the cost I'll try it. I should get 64 loads(at a half cup per load) out of the 2 gallons so that makes it ummmmmmm
about 3 cents a load.
If you want more information Google Laundry Soap Recipe and you'll be amazed at what comes up. (there is a powder version also).

My next adventure..and I use the word lightly.. is bar soap. Can't wait to try it but that must be done on a kid free distraction free day.

Blessings,
Rhonda

Happy washing.
RhondaRhondahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17795081104677489453noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7143105794211342227.post-70965882592298939582012-01-26T04:00:00.000-08:002012-01-26T04:00:10.944-08:00Updating projects
Still working on the millennium quilt.

I found an owner when it is finished.

I have one niece born in 2000. I get to attend a quilting retreat in September,October and November this year. The following are pictures from the September one. One of my friends said she was going for a walk "where the sound of music was filmed". It was such an appropriate description of of the hills surrounding the area.

i was wandering the grounds and playing with my camera. Hope you enjoy them.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 287px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRTuhhMNSItT1CSDEWbC7wxS2nr1BNlVTXcyUkh1LuhOejuol9gqfKlKgl9sVTzTMpDY13_46z05As4LAcvnG3oOiOKkRY5yCDw44JmcV2AxuBrbjpvdt3QS0FYBBbehHWx7A5fmTFXcZb/s320/quilting+retreat+sept+012.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656481117288812338" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQoh6CYRG_s0ikUQMsNiQNmKONS_dl8BdDNFuCNV1ufHyBVgPo_9Y9Yq_YQ8-ezUczerhPbx8GLf1wkTDW5UX99uR2fKvojKckxN0zrI2FRhtTlN7SldjJc1D5zRPRVQRTj2f-CacqpG38/s320/quilting+retreat+sept+008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656480989372339058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZd4jLDZ9Hn_n46zxJxDwgwyTUm3kXCda5m37JQy17PoDF_eHe2UhvBotV1t4SQEQDbMByxzcPV97JN1EyySwufXBlGzCW_KvF2FiTV1AoSPnfD8cSnSb8xZBKlCFuNHYf9GnB_SRdWze7/s320/quilting+retreat+sept+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656480803967047810" />

The pinwheel quilt is from my summer challenge. We do a block a day from May until August. I love the challenge because I get a whole top done in 3 months. But I must admit I don't do one every day I do a bunch a couple days. Of course I do more than the total that the one a day would be too. I love to piece big quilts but HATE to make backs for them. Something I'll have to work on. The story for this one is that I wanted to use up the 30"s feedsack repos I had . There is a pinwheel of every print I have. 101 to be exact. The remaining 2 leftover from the front are pieced in the back. I will write on one of them for the label.

Some finished projects from my friends.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvcD9d52J4V6PDzV0V7cjxKq84bUSOiftzxwKmE7LbknSDGF2FVWOHH_C25hSnQSLc0JGhryaKF6Bho4bbktN3RLD0PpSFV1y99sWXHSmYnN1Z4mGKlD-EAjDogKMNhbg4oL3RiLQE1TpW/s320/quilting+retreat+sept+014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656484483341399186" />

This is this gals first quilt top. made from her grandmas fabrics for her granddaughter. She had a run in with the postal service last month. For some reason they crushed my box and then sent it back to her. Nice guys !!! But it reached me at last... with no interference this time.

It was full of "goodies" just for little o me. She sent me wonderful magazines.I am a magazineaholic.
The candles smell wonderful and will get put to good use now that it's getting towards fall and we're starting to be inside more.

This was my "double dip". She sent both months in one box.
More magazines which I will be with me today as I leave for a weekend quilting retreat. I can pass them around the girls there also. I'm trying to finish up some things before I start anything new. I'm going to try to post finished items so I have some motivation to finish more.

Here is a table runner I finished for my secret sister. The theme was "fun in the Sun" it isn't very primitive but is is fun.
We are preparing for school to start soon. My girls are getting bored. I hemmed a few pairs of pants for my daughter and my niece. My new plan is to finish one thing I have to do then on to something I want to do. Wish me luck.

My oldest daughter got her drivers license last week. We had to buy a new car for various reasons so she has been "given" the use of my faithful Caravan. Now I say it is because she isn't allowed to drive the new car which is considerably smaller (by the way). My real reasoning is that it has lots more car around her should-God forbid- anything ever happen to her. Call it what you want I feel safer....

What a magical time she is having with this new found freedom. Last evening she wanted a burger so off she went. She wanted to go to the mall so off she went... Get the picture. It really is a lot of fun watching her grow through this latest stage. She's even cleaning out the car right now. Washing the outside as well as the inside and vacuuming. Can you beat that!!

Here is a picture of her on her mission trip this summer. Not sure how much paint was on the building.

She's a good girl and really fun to have around.

Haven't finished too much in the line of projects lately. I belong to a summer quilting group designed to get you to sew one block a day. We started as an off shoot of Crazy Mom Quilts blog except we do a different block every year. This year we did a pinwheel block. I had 102 blocks completed in the allotted time. It was not sewn into a top however. Now it is in strips and ready to go to my Sept quilt retreat to be completed.

It's made from my collection of reproduction feedsacks. There's not one repeat block in the quilt. I thought I would be using up so much fabric and I didn't even make a dent in it. So I will be pulling out more patterns to use it up.

i will close with some pictures of other quilts in various stages theta were brought to our show and tell picnic at the end of the summer. Enjoy.
All of us ....preparing for show and tell.

She has some of the best tutorials. She gives me so much inspiration.
My daughter was leaving for the beach with 3 other teenage girls so I made 4 bags( of course). I did modify her pattern to be a pocket along the sides instead of elastic but they turned out really great. This past Saturday was no exception. It was a productive morning.

I have always LOVED cake stands. I couldn't believe my luck finding this one. It was a pleasure to rescue this and add it to my collection. Although not typical of my prim decor I do use them with desserts. First I love magazines,but each has so many projects that I can't begin to get them all made. This one was no exception. There's the watermelon tablerunner on the cover
I'm dying to try
It's really hard to post anything I've been working on lately because most of it has gone to my SS. Last month the theme was "picnic" boy I had to think outside the box for that one!!! One of the prior magazines my SS sent me had a casserole carrier in it and I took that idea and adapted it. I can't show you hers ( You can go here to see it on her blog) since I have no picture of it. I made myself one too.
.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjDn7LFuu8sqY_pOBUyQ_JYQYoUBbNNq2miCCB0kM2e64JnZg9s6Uo3wXLX1lKw9u3aGJgkgn4sPHbPNTRbzLlT8zWP0OrEKod7Pxf87wpGKxoh3B9SlUCH9nKyzyCjc6GUFyuSfUpgEbl/s320/emily+025.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617668754629678610" />
They fit a 13x9 dish and they are insulated for either hot or cold. I just googled casserole carrier and combined a few things from what I read on there with some things from the magazine and viola!!

These will be my SIL gifts fro Christmas this year too. The pattern is basic so I can make each one different.

Leaving you with a picture of our faithful companion.
